One week to go until Madrid becomes the epicentre of olive oil!

It's here! The Olive Oil World Congress (OOWC) will hold its first edition next week at the headquarters of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid. The event, which will take place on 26, 27 and 28 June 2024, will bring together olive oil professionals from Italy, Brazil, Greece, Morocco, Turkey and other countries.

According to Ramzi Belkhodja, president of the Scientific Committee and coordinator of Plant Production, Health and Breeding at CIHEAM Zaragoza, "the OOWC is not only a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge research, but also a space for knowledge exchange and networking among professionals. With only one week left to go, I encourage all those interested to secure their place and be part of this transformative experience".

The congress will be structured in eight thematic blocks. On the first day, crucial topics such as the impact of olive oil in the face of climate change, genetics and plant production, as well as the challenges in manufacturing processes, especially in terms of digital transformation and the valorisation of by-products, will be discussed. This first day will serve as an introduction to the most emerging trends affecting olive oil production and sustainability.

On June 27th, the focus will shift to trade standards, quality and product safety, also covering communication and marketing strategies, concluding with an analysis of the relationship between olive oil and gastronomy. This conference will allow attendees to gain an insight into how olive oil is positioned in the global market and integrated into contemporary culinary practices, highlighting its versatility and added value.

The congress will culminate on June 28th with a presentation on olive oil trade and consumption, exploring market trends and consumer behaviour. In addition, the health benefits of olive oil will be addressed, highlighting the importance of this product in the Mediterranean diet. This final day will consolidate the role of olive oil not only as a commercial product, but also as an ally for health and economic development. In addition, Luis Planas Puchades, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Spanish Government, is expected to close the OOWC.
