Greece strengthens olive future with international award

The National Collection of Olive Varieties, located at the Institute of Olive, Subtropical Crops and Viticulture (IOSV) of ELGO - DIMITRA in Chania, has recently been recognised as an International Olive Germplasm Collection by the International Olive Council (IOC).

This prestigious recognition places Greece among the seven countries in the world with officially certified collections at international level.

The collection, which contains more than 100 varieties of olive trees of various origins, both local and foreign, is conserved in seven fields in three regions of Chania.

Of these, 64 varieties have already been included in the National Catalogue of Cultivated Plant Varieties.

This achievement, the result of years of research, dedication and international evaluation, not only increases the global visibility of ELGO-DIMITRA and IOSV, but also opens up new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as forestry research, specialised training and the development of olive cultivation in Greece.
